Spontaneous brain activity in healthy subjects and Parkinson's disease

The research group of Assistant Professor Dr. Esther Florin aims at providing a characterization of the neurophysiological basis of the brain’s resting state networks (RSNs) by determining how communication between and within RSNs is mediated. Many neurological diseases lead to pathological changes in brain signals that are already visible during rest. This makes analyzing spontaneous activity a promising avenue to better understand the brain’s function and dysfunction. This goal is achieved by analyzing electro-/magnetoencephaolographic (E/MEG) data from healthy participants and Parkinson (PD) patients. Results obtained are translationally used to improve our understanding of the pathophysiology of neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s disease. A particular focus is on tracing out the electrophysiological mechanisms underlying the effectiveness of dopaminergic treatment and deep brain stimulation for Parkinson patients.
Jun. Prof. Dr. Esther Florin studied physics at Friedrich Schiller University Jena, at Julius Maximilians University Würzburg as well as at the University at Buffalo, the State University of New York, USA. In 2010 she obtained her PhD in Physics from Forschungszentrum Jülich and University of Wuppertal. In 2016 she received the Venia Legendi in the field of experimental neurology from the University to Cologne. Since June 2016 she is Assistant Professor for Systems Neurosciences at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf.
